Business Manager, Defense & Space

Hi, I am Josh Mellon, a Small Business Manager for two firms.

Josh Mellon's Bio:

I joined Blue Ridge Research and Consulting in 2010, where I serve as a Business Manager, Contracts Officer and Scientist. I am responsible for weapons analysis, financial management, building institutional memory, and improving operational efficiency. Recent projects include jet noise and nuclear siren measurement and analysis, spearheading multiple candidate searches, and facility security clearance, among much else. Prior to joining, I had the opportunity to gain three years of finance and business management experience at ViewPlus Technologies, where I won and managed four grants, helped establish ViewPlus' international branch, and developed financial analysis tools. I served on the board of the Software Association of Oregon, was a business plan judge for the Oregon State University (OSU) Austin Entrepreneurship Program, and taught undergraduate physics labs at OSU as a volunteer for three years. During my BS and MS degrees, I acquired research experience through internships at NASA, SRI International, and SETI where I performed research to improve earthquake warning models. I acquired additional management experience as an Army Sergeant and promotions policy adviser during a deployment to Kuwait in 2005-2006. I received my BS in Physics and my MS in Applied Physics with an emphasis in Business from Oregon State University.   Goals: PMP Certification within two years, AICUZ studies management, and career opportunities that build upon management, writing, organizational and analytical skills.   Specialties: Jet, siren, weapons, and rocket noise measurement and analysis, contract evaluation and negotiation, SBIR financial management, GAAP and FAR, continual process improvement, multi-company training program coordination, cost analysis tool creation, marketing (SEO: Josh Mellon), HR, a Notary Public, grant acquisition and management.

Josh Mellon's Experience:

  • Operations Specialist at ViewPlus Technologies, Inc.

Analyze comprehensive product costs and profits under varied purchasing scenarios, create user-friendly profit analysis tools, determine procurement requirements, negotiate contracts, review contractor performance, settle claims, coordinate a multi-company training program, facilitate group analysis of internal company communications and processes, acquire and manage grant funds and report on usage, compose and coordinate annual reports, assist with asset depreciation and tax reports, develop department budgets, consult with international lawyers and accountants to ensure EU Directives compliance, coordinate value added tax recovery, write standardized protocols, supervise financial reporting, evaluate insurance policies, set-up a company investing plan, provide guidance on liability/arbitration language, represent ViewPlus at technology and business networking events, and improve the product transition process from design and development to production and release.

  • Physics Lab Instructor at Oregon State University

I was a TA during my graduate studies and then volunteered for three years thereafter to teach undergraduate physics lab courses. This work is compelling to me because, in trying to answer the myriad questions students new to physics ask, I get to share in the raw wonder of science. Moreover, volunteering focuses my efforts entirely on student learning, which I find very rewarding. Among the many enjoyable work experiences I have been fortunate to encounter, my fondest memories are from teaching.

  • Sergeant, Promotions Office at Army National Guard

I served a one year deployment in Kuwait where I was a promotions policy adviser and website administrator, with a Secret security clearance, for the U.S. Army's efforts in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, and Djibouti. This was an enlightening, difficult experience that offered opportunities for leadership growth. I earned an Honorable Discharge for my eight years of military service, and I was awarded an Army Commendation Medal for my accomplishments in Kuwait.

  • Research Fellow at SRI International

I identified and analyzed thousands of samples using the Kendrick Mass Technique. I wrote extensive mineral sample identification procedures, and I maintained excellent communication with offsite and onsite supervisors.

  • Research Assistant at NASA Ames Research Center

I constructed a variable resistor used in numerous experiments, and contributed to experiment design and execution. I enjoyed the team environment and went on to write my undergraduate thesis based on an analysis of the experiment results, which I presented to Oregon State University faculty and interested students.
